Bavaria´s Number-One Geotope - The GroSSer Pfahl near Viechtach

The Pfahl is one of Bavaria´s most important geological monuments. It is a crevice in the mountain ground of the Bavarian Forest filled with quartz and slate, which developed about 275 million years ago. On an almost perfectly straight line of 150 km length, it runs through the Bavarian Forest, most of the time under the surface. In Viechtach, the “Großer Pfahl“ emerges above the ground in a most impressive way as a bizarre white quartz rock.

In 2001, the “Großer Pfahl“ near Viechtach was included in the list of the most beautiful geological phenomena and was awarded the quality designation “Bavaria´s Geotope no. 1”.

For centuries, myths and legends have been woven around the Pfahl. One of the most popular ones says that the Großer Pfahl is a petrified dragon guarding the beautiful crystal princess imprisoned in the mountain.

Hiking tours around the Großer Pfahl

Get close to nature and discover the Pfahl: a nature trail consisting of two circular trails and 12 info boards runs through this nature monument with its white ridges, its deep quartz quarries, its heath landscape grazed by sheep and its forests bathed in light. Regularly from May through October, there are guided hiking tours through the nature reserve and interesting guided tours of the educational apiary nearby. Guided group tours can be organized on request.
